The town of Wexford is founded by the Norsemen who gave it the name Waesfjoed, meaning estuary of mud flats. Like its neighbour Waterford the port flourished. The golden age for Wexford however ended with the silting of the port, making the port inaccessible for larger ships.
Overall County Wexford has managed to keep a low profile in history, but has experienced two turbulent era's.
In the eve of the Anglo-Norman Invasion the future county was the battlefield for the King of Leinster Diarmuid MacMurrough and his lifetime enemy Tiernan O'Rourke. Diarmuid MacMurrough, who is said to be buried in Ferns, asked and got support from the Anglo-Norman and therewith in fact initiated foreign rule over Ireland.
The second occasion was during the Rebellion of 1798, also known as the United Irishmen Rebellion, which was in County Wexford focussed on Enniscorthy and surroundings.
Besides the historical aware visitors the county attracts people who want to spend their holiday by climbing or walking in the Blackstairs Mountains or relaxing seaside visitors who find there rest on the sandy beaches.
