The city of Waterford is founded by the Vikings, which explains the odd layout of the city with its long quays and narrow lanes. Under the Vikings this city, called Vadrefjord, was a flourishing port. The dock industry remains important for the city during the centuries. The combination of port and the famous Waterford Crystal made Waterford a wealthy city and much of its Viking origin and its prosperity is still visible in the city.
Waterford is a vivid city, well worth spending a night.
The scenery of County Waterford is quite varied. If the weather is on your side you might enjoy an afternoon on one of the beaches, or look for a cooler place in the mountains in the north and centre of the county.
For those who hate the Irish rains we have some good news: County Waterford is the driest and warmest county. Most of the rain is obstructed by the mountains, while the warm air from the Gulf Stream reach the county.
