County Louth is the smallest county and its two dominating cities, Dundalk and Drogheda, are industrious and at first sight not really appealing for the visitor.
On second sight however you may not only find pretty, though uniform looking, villages and settlements, but also a rich heritage.
In County Louth you can find the remains from prehistoric eras and the ruins of monasteries and abbeys.
Amongst the ancient remains are the Proleek Dolmen near Ballymascanlon and the Barnaveddog Standing Stone near Ardee.
Notably are the monastic site of Monasterboice with its impressive round tower and three High Crosses and Mellifont Abbey with its odd shaped lavabo.
Surrounded by ancient and historical sites in the bounded counties County Louth is an excellent starting point for your Ireland tour. Located north from Dublin airport you drive in no-time over the M1 motorway straight into the heart of historical Ireland.
