The name Gaelic name for County Longford, Longfort or Longfort Uí Fearraill in full, means fort of the O'Farrell family.
County Longford is an inland county, but remarkably several of its boundaries are made up by rivers and lakes. This note should lift the veil a bit already: County Longford is paradise for anglers and water sport enthusiasts.
Lough Ree is seemingly the place to be for anglers, while most of the water sport will take place on the River Shannon which forms most of the western border of the county.
Among the heritage sites is a recently discovered track way of oak planks near Corlea.
