The Gaelic name of the city of Limerick, Luimneach , means something like Covered with Cloaks. It is said that this name derived from the cloaks floating in the Shannon after a battle. Apparently the Limerick-folks liked a good fight and luckily form them an opponent was always within reach as County Limerick has the most castles of all counties in Ireland.
The Lough Gur Centre is worthwhile for those interested in older history.
The east part of County Limerick is a rich limestone plain known as the Golden Vale. The north-eastern part of the county however is hilly, while the south-east is simply mountainous due the presence of the Galtree Mountains.
Beside the huge city of Limerick, the third largest city in the Republic of Ireland, there are many small picturesque rural dwellings. Adare, a few kilometres outside Limerick, is mentioned in all travel guides for being the prettiest Irish village, so in the high season there is absolutely no reason to visit this village.
The city of Limerick provides entertainment of all kinds and is an excellent base to explore the surroundings.
