A large part of County Fermanagh consists of Lough Erne. The maze of waterways and islands has provided protection against the Vikings and the English.
The resistance to the English was very active in this predominating Catholic county. The people of County Fermanagh elected Bobby Sands as their Member of Parliament while he was on hunger strike for example. Support for the Provisional Irish Republican Army (PIRA) is decreased after a bomb killed 11 people during a commemoration of the First and Second World War in 1987 in the town of Enniskillen, which is a Protestant enclave in the county.
This attack has left deep scars in the community, so it is a good idea to avoid discussions about politics and religion.

There are 154 islands in Lough Erne, from which several are worthwhile a visit for their historical remains. In the summer the main islands are reachable by ferries. If you do not want to depend on ferry schedules, and if your basic navigational skills go beyond the level of a Cub Scout, you might consider to rent a cruiser. As far as we know a navigation licence is not mandatory.

In fact Lough Erne is a widening in the River Erne and the strange thing is that the river widened itself twice: Lower Lough Erne north-west of Enniskillen and Upper Lough Erne. Enniskillen itself is started as a small settlement on an island. Because of its strategic position, not only in the middle of the two lakes, but also on the mediaeval highway between Ulster and Connacht, Enniskillen has always been a vivacious market town.

A not everyday form of water sport is a visit at the Marble Arch Caves, which included a boat trip over a subterranean lake.

If you are heading westwards after your visit at County Fermanagh you should consider the scenic drive through Navar Forest.
