County Cavan is ideal for a relaxing break. Characteristic for the county are the low round hills and its water. With over 300 lakes and several rivers the county is made for water sports, which includes fishing, swimming and cruising.
The Shannon, Ireland's longest and most praised river, rises on the slopes of Cuilcagh Mountain in what is known as the Shannon Pot. There are some nice walking routes in this area.
Visitors searching for ancient or historical monuments are coming off badly in County Cavan. The only megalithic monument which is worthwhile visiting would be the odd shaped Cohaw Court Cairn, which are seemingly two court tombs placed back to back. There are some castles and towers but none of them is really spectacular.
The city of Cavan is worthwhile a visit because it is the only mediaeval city founded by the Irish themselves.
