Sunsets in Ireland

Most likely it is an European emotion, but when standing on the western coast of Ireland we are seized by the idea that this must be the end of the geographical world. A good sunset intensifies this truly fascinating, yet seriously old-fashioned, idea. Luckily sunsets are one of the few events in Ireland with a fixed scheduled time, so check the graph and went up that cliff!

Times of sunset in western Ireland

Obviously there are a lot of enchanting sites to witness the sunset, but to get you going you might try Slea Head, Doolin, one of the Aran Island, Inishbofin, Achill Island or Clare Island.

Please note that the graph is more or less accurate on sea level for the city of Galway in an average year. Most likely you will be above sea level, which means that the sun will set slightly later. Depending your plans you can use of this extra time to check the memory card of your camera or to rehearse your wedding proposal!
In addition the existence of leap years is throwing a spanner in the graph, but if you maintain a margin of plus and min five minutes you would be safe. In theory this safety margin gives you enough time to embarrass the assembled seabirds by performing your version of the Song for Ireland.
The last remark is Summertime, the European equivalent of Daylight Saving Time (DST), which starts at the last Sunday of March and ends at the last Sunday of October. In the graph we have solved this problem, which explains both the gap as the overlapping.
We have no idea why, but some people wanted to know when the sun sets in Dublin or Belfast. Instead of drawing an other graph: deduct 20 minutes from the times in the graph and indulge yourself.
A last tip: check the newspaper for the exact time if your life or marital bliss depends on it.
