Con Colbert

Cornelius Con Colbert was born in Athea, County Limerick, in 1888. We could not find the exact date of his birth. After attending school the family moved to Dublin where Con Colbert worked at a bakery.

He became a devoted member of Na Fianna Éirrean, or Warriors of Ireland, a youth organisation closely linked with the Irish Republican Brotherhood (IRB). In 1913 Con Colbert joined the Irish Volunteer Force (IVF). Soon he became drill instructor and acquired the rank of Captain.
Although he spent most of his spare time working for Na Fianna Éirrean and the Irish Volunteer Force (IVF) Con Colbert accepted Pádraic Pearse's invitation to teach physical education at Saint Enda's School.

During the Easter Rising Con Colbert was initially positioned under command of Eamonn Ceannt at the Watkin's Brewery, but at a later stage he moved with his company to the Jameson's Distillery and became therewith a commanding officer.

Con Colbert did not call any witness to his defence and his only statement was I have nothing to say. After instructing a soldier to pin the mark closer to his heart Con Colbert was executed in Kilmainham Gaol on 8 May 1916
